| Abstract | Neste trabalho apresentamos uma revisão histórico-científica da importância da observação do eclipse solar ocorrido em Sobral em 1919. Revisamos alguns conceitos fundamentais que norteiam a história desta observação, que deu validade experimental à Teoria da Relatividade Geral (TRG). Considerando a importância que a observação teve na história da física, oferecemos uma narrativa que se inicia nos primórdios do pensamento humano, passando por diferentes épocas do nosso desenvolvimento como espécie até chegarmos aos estudos pré-Relatividade. A observação do eclipse de Sobral abriu novos horizontes na cosmologia, não só permitindo uma nova abordagem para o estudo do Universo em grande escala mas também por definir ferramentas que permitem mapear a distribuição de massa utilizando o fenômeno de lente gravitacional. Discutimos as medidas do desvio da luz de estrelas do aglomerado das Hyades e discorremos brevemente sobre a importância de uma revisão crítica da história da observação do eclipse e suas conseqüências para a qualidade da ciência que realizamos no país atualmente. ABSTRACT: We present a historical-scientific review of the importance of the observation of the solar eclipse occurred at Sobral in 1919. We discuss some fundamental concepts that guide the history of this observation, which gave experimental validity to the Theory of General Relativity. Considering the importance that this observation had in the history of physics, we offer a narrative that begins at the dawn of human thought, passing through different epochs of our development as a species until we reach pre-Relativity studies. The observation of the Sobral eclipse opened new horizons in cosmology, not only allowing a new approach to the study of the large scale structure of the universe but also by defining tools that help us mapping the mass distribution using the so called gravitational lens phenomenon. We present the measurements of the deviations of the starlight from the Hyades cluster and briefly discuss the importance of a critical review of the history of the eclipse observation and its consequences for the quality of science we carry out in the country today. | |||
